Calling all nature enthusiasts and community champions in Seattle! Mark your calendars for an important conservation effort happening right in our backyard. The beautiful Saint Edward State Park needs your helping hands to combat one of its biggest threats – invasive English Ivy. As urban development continues to encroach on our precious green spaces, the role of community volunteers in preserving these natural areas becomes increasingly vital. This September, you can be part of the solution by joining a dedicated team of environmental stewards in protecting the native landscape of one of our region’s valued parks.

Saint Edward State Park is a local asset teeming with diverse flora and fauna, but its ecological balance is under threat. As visitation increases, so does the need for active conservation. By participating in this upcoming event, you’ll not only contribute to the park’s well-being but also connect with like-minded neighbors who share your passion for environmental stewardship. On September 8th from 10am-1pm, Friends of Saint Edward State Park, University of Washington Collaborative for Socio-Ecological Engagement, and Washington State Parks are hosting a crucial restoration work party focused on removing invasive English Ivy. This persistent plant has been steadily overtaking the park’s native landscape, threatening the delicate ecosystem that makes Saint Edward so special. Volunteers will take a scenic twenty-minute walk down the Seminary trail to the lake, where the group will focus its removal efforts. Though this is one of the gentler trails in the park, participants should be prepared for approximately four hundred feet of elevation change during the hike.

This event represents more than just a day of volunteering – it’s a vital component in the ongoing fight to preserve urban green spaces. As development continues throughout our region, these protected natural areas become increasingly important refuges for native plants and wildlife. By dedicating just a few hours of your time, you’ll contribute to a larger conservation effort that helps ensure Saint Edward State Park remains a thriving ecosystem for generations to come. The work may be challenging, but the rewards – both for the park and for your sense of community connection – are immeasurable.

This family-friendly event welcomes volunteers aged 8 and older, making it a perfect opportunity to introduce children to environmental stewardship. No previous experience is required – just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to learn! The meeting point is at the playground, with designated volunteer parking available on the south lawn just beyond (follow NE 145th toward the park, turn left after the ball field, and continue following signs to the playground). This strategic location offers easy access to the work area while minimizing disruption to regular park visitors.

Registration is mandatory for all participants and can be completed through Eventbrite (look for the registration button on the event page). After signing up, you’ll receive confirmation and reminder emails with additional details. As for what to bring, closed-toe shoes are essential for safety, along with water and sunscreen for personal comfort. Gardening gloves are also required, though extra pairs will be available for those who don’t have their own. The event will proceed rain or shine, so dress appropriately for the weather conditions. With proper preparation, this can be a rewarding experience regardless of what the weather has in store!
